Botanical Blends vs Kratom: What Is Actually Different

The short answer: they are different plants, they produce different alkaloids, and they sit in different places under federal law. Kratom is one species — Mitragyna speciosa — while "botanical blends" is a shelf category covering several unrelated plants, most commonly Cat's Claw, kava, kanna and functional mushrooms. The differences are real and checkable at the level of composition and regulation.

One thing this article deliberately does not do is compare effects. That comparison would require controlled human evidence that does not exist for most of these plants, and making it would take us outside what we are permitted or able to say. What follows is botany, chemistry and law.

The plants: closer relatives than the marketing suggests, in one case

Most of the botanical-blends shelf is taxonomically remote from kratom. Kava is in the pepper family. Kanna is a South African succulent in the ice-plant family. Functional mushrooms are not plants at all.

Cat's Claw is the exception, and it is worth being straight about it. Uncaria and Mitragyna are both genera in Rubiaceae, the coffee family, and both fall within the same tribe. They are different genera and different species, from opposite sides of the planet, with different growth habits — Uncaria tomentosa is an Amazonian woody climbing vine harvested for its bark, Mitragyna speciosa is a Southeast Asian tree harvested for its leaves — but they are not distant strangers. Anyone telling you they are unrelated plants is overstating the case.

Family relationship is not composition, though. Coffee and gardenia are also Rubiaceae. What actually matters is which molecules each plant makes, and there the profiles separate cleanly. The compounds: where the real difference sits

Kratom's alkaloids

Mitragyna speciosa leaf contains a set of corynanthe-type indole alkaloids. The ones that show up on analytical panels are mitragynine, 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), speciociliatine, speciogynine, paynantheine and corynantheidine. Mitragynine is the most abundant in raw leaf; 7-OH occurs naturally at very low levels and can also be produced by oxidation, which is why concentrated 7-OH products became a distinct commercial category rather than a leaf product.

Three further compounds matter to this comparison because they are named in the 2026 regulatory action: mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15 (dihydro-7-hydroxymitragynine) and MGM-16 (9-fluoro-dihydro-7-hydroxymitragynine). MGM-16 in particular is a fluorinated molecule — that fluorine does not come from a plant.

Uncaria's alkaloids

Uncaria tomentosa is characterised by oxindole alkaloids: mitraphylline, isomitraphylline, pteropodine, isopteropodine, rhynchophylline and isorhynchophylline, occurring in pentacyclic and tetracyclic forms that vary by population. An oxindole is structurally related to an indole but is a different molecule, and analysts treat the two groups separately. The kratom alkaloids listed above are not constituents of Uncaria tomentosa.

Both plants make compounds inside the broad indole-alkaloid class, and that shared class membership is exactly the kind of superficial similarity vague labelling exploits. Two plants can both make indole alkaloids and make entirely different ones — a point we unpack in our explainer on the term.

Kava and kanna

Kava's characteristic constituents are kavalactones — kavain, dihydrokavain, methysticin, dihydromethysticin, yangonin, desmethoxyyangonin. These are lactones, not alkaloids at all. There is no nitrogen-containing ring system at the core. Whatever else is true about kava, it has no chemical relationship to kratom.

Kanna's alkaloids are mesembrine-type: mesembrine, mesembrenone, mesembrenol, mesembranol. Also structurally unrelated to anything in Mitragyna.

The regulatory difference, stated precisely

This is where imprecision is most common and most costly, so here are the specifics as of 30 July 2026.

Kratom leaf itself is not a federally controlled substance. It is not on any CSA schedule. What is happening in 2026 concerns specific compounds, not the plant.

On 1 July 2026 the DEA filed two Notices of Intent to temporarily schedule under 21 U.S.C. 811(h), published in the Federal Register on 6 July 2026:

  • FR Doc 2026-13580 covers 7-hydroxymitragynine above a threshold — 0.050% w/w, or 1.00 mg per article. The threshold structure is what distinguishes a concentrated 7-OH product from ordinary leaf material, and we work through the arithmetic in the threshold explainer.
  • FR Doc 2026-13581 covers mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15 and MGM-16, with no threshold. Any detectable amount is within scope.

The orders take effect on or after 5 August 2026, on the date the order publishes. They run two years, extendable by one. A temporary scheduling order of this kind is not subject to judicial review. There is no grace period and no sell-through: retail sale of a Schedule I substance to the public is not permitted, and a holder without the relevant registration must surrender stock. State law is a separate layer. A small number of states prohibit kratom outright, and a larger number have adopted Kratom Consumer Protection Acts that permit sale subject to labelling, age and adulteration rules. Those rules do not track federal scheduling and they change frequently, so check the law where you live before assuming anything about your jurisdiction.

Uncaria tomentosa is not named in either notice. Neither is Piper methysticum or Sceletium tortuosum. Kava is not controlled under the Controlled Substances Act.

The important caveat: legality attaches to what is in a finished product, not to the plant named on the front of the package. A product labelled Cat's Claw that contained a scheduled compound would be a scheduled product. Which is why the next section matters more than everything above it.

What testing can prove, and where it stops

We are a distributor and retailer. We do not manufacture or formulate anything, so our contribution is reading supplier documents carefully and publishing what they say.

The supplier certificates we hold substantiate three statements about the batches tested, and no more: no kratom, no mitragynine, no 7-OH, at the reporting limits the laboratory used. Those are third-party results on identified lots, and they are what we stand behind.

Those same panels do not include mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15, MGM-16 or corynoxine B. Three of those four are named in the DEA action. A certificate cannot clear a compound it never looked for, so we do not describe our products as free of them, and you should be sceptical of anyone in this category who does. Blanket phrases like "contains no scheduled substances" are, in every case we have examined, broader than the panel behind them.

We also publish an uncomfortable result rather than hiding it: two of the certificates we hold report Total Alkaloids 0.00 with mitraphylline non-detect — no Uncaria marker alkaloid found in those batches. Some brands' listings describe their products as containing a proprietary indole alkaloid from the Cat's Claw plant; that is the brand's own description, attributed as such, and not a claim we repeat in our own voice. What is not different

Three honest similarities, because a comparison that only flatters one side is not a comparison.

Both come through long, lightly documented supply chains. Bark from Peru and leaf from Indonesia pass through comparable numbers of hands, with comparable opportunities for substitution.

Neither has a deep controlled human evidence base. Traditional use is history, not evidence. It tells you a culture built practices around a plant; it does not establish mechanism, dose or outcome.

Both sit in a market where testing quality varies enormously. Alkaloid-only certificates with heavy metals and microbials marked "not tested" are common on both sides of this comparison. The discriminating question is never which plant is on the label — it is which analytes were on the panel, which laboratory ran it, and whether the batch number matches the package in your hand.

Is Cat's Claw a type of kratom?

No. They are different genera and different species from opposite hemispheres, using different plant parts and producing different alkaloids. They do share a plant family, Rubiaceae, which is a genuine fact about their taxonomy and not a fact about their composition.

Does the 2026 DEA action ban kratom?

No. The two Federal Register notices cover specific compounds — 7-OH above a defined threshold, and mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15 and MGM-16 with no threshold. Kratom leaf itself is not scheduled federally, though several states regulate or prohibit it independently.

Can a lab test prove a product is kratom-free?

It can prove that the compounds on the panel were not detected at the method's reporting limits. That is a narrower statement than "kratom-free" and much narrower than "free of scheduled compounds." Read the analyte list before you read the results.

Why does kava keep appearing next to kratom in the news?

Mostly because both are sold in similar retail settings, and because combination products exist. Combining them would destroy the entire basis of a kratom-free shelf, so we treat kava-plus-kratom products as a hard exclusion rather than a judgement call.

Which is safer?

We are not going to answer that, and neither should anyone selling you either one. Any such comparison would require comparative human data that does not exist at the necessary quality.
