Noble vs Tudei Kava: Why Cultivar and Plant Part Matter

Not all kava is the same plant material. Kava cultivars fall into two commercially important groups: noble cultivars, which are the traditional daily-use varieties selected over centuries in the Pacific, and non-noble types — tudei, or "two-day," kava along with wild Piper wichmannii stock — which have a different kavalactone profile and are not traditionally consumed the same way. Cultivar is only half the question, though. The other half is plant part, and root and rhizome are the only parts that belong in a finished product.

Both of those are testable claims. Neither is verified by a word on a label. This post explains what the distinction actually is, why aerial plant material is a red flag rather than a rounding error, and exactly what fields a useful kava certificate of analysis carries. What a kava "cultivar" actually is

Kava, Piper methysticum, is a sterile cultigen. It does not set viable seed and has been propagated exclusively from cuttings for a very long time. Every plant in commerce is therefore a clone of a named variety, and Pacific growers maintain and name those varieties with considerable precision — Borogu, Melomelo, Boroguru, Mahakea and dozens more.

Because they are clones, cultivars are chemically consistent in a way that wild-harvested botanicals usually are not. That consistency is what makes cultivar identity testable rather than a matter of trust. If a supplier says "noble," a laboratory can check.

Chemotypes: the six-digit code

Six kavalactones account for most of the material in kava root. In the classification system used throughout the kava literature and trade, they are numbered by their order of elution in the standard analysis: 1 demethoxyyangonin, 2 dihydrokavain, 3 yangonin, 4 kavain, 5 dihydromethysticin, 6 methysticin.

A chemotype is written as a six-digit string listing those numbers in order of abundance, highest first. So a chemotype beginning "42" means kavain is the most abundant kavalactone and dihydrokavain the second. Noble cultivars characteristically lead with kavain. Tudei and wichmannii-derived material characteristically leads with dihydrokavain and dihydromethysticin, and dihydromethysticin sitting near the front of the string is the classic signature.

This is why "noble" is a chemical claim and not a marketing adjective. A lab running the six kavalactones by HPLC produces the chemotype directly. If a supplier can name the cultivar but cannot show you the chemotype, they are asking you to take the important half on faith.

Why tudei is treated as a problem

The name comes from the reported duration of its effects, which is where a lot of the folk objection originates — traditional drinkers describe next-day after-effects and nausea that the daily-use cultivars do not produce. That alone would be enough to keep it out of a commercial supplement, but there is a more specific concern.

Non-noble material carries higher levels of flavokavain B, a chalcone that appears in the hepatotoxicity discussion covered in our post on what the kava liver record actually says. The evidence here is laboratory and animal work rather than a clean human causal chain, and we are not going to overstate it. What we will say is that when a category has an unresolved safety question, and one identifiable subset of the raw material is over-represented in the concerning end of the literature, the sensible commercial answer is to exclude that subset entirely rather than to argue about it.

Regulators have reached the same conclusion from different directions. Vanuatu — the largest exporter and the country with the deepest institutional knowledge of the plant — restricts kava export to noble varieties by law. The international Codex regional standard for kava products specifies noble varieties and the peeled rhizome and root. And in the United States, Michigan's state agriculture department has issued an advisory treating non-noble kava added to foods or dietary supplements as adulterated. That advisory is the only state-level action we found that reaches supplements rather than only prepared beverages. We flag one caveat: the primary Michigan documents would not load for us and we sourced them through trade reporting, so anyone shipping kava into Michigan should obtain them first-hand.

Plant part: why aerial material is a red flag

This is at least as important as cultivar and gets a fraction of the attention.

Kavalactones concentrate in the underground parts — the lateral roots and the rhizome. Stems, leaves and the peelings sometimes called makas contain far less of what anyone wants and more of what nobody does. Pipermethystine, an alkaloid largely absent from properly cleaned root, is concentrated in leaves and stem peelings and has shown toxicity to liver cells in laboratory studies. Flavokavain B is likewise higher in aerial material.

Aerial parts entering the export supply chain during a period of high demand is one of the leading explanations offered for the European case cluster around 2000. Whether or not that explanation is complete, it establishes the specification: root and rhizome only, stated on the label, and confirmed on the certificate.

There is a practical dimension too. Aerial material is cheap, and it is the obvious place for margin to be found by a supplier under price pressure. A label that names the plant part is a label whose supplier has committed to something checkable.

What a good kava certificate of analysis shows

Most kava sold online publishes either nothing or a single-page document showing total kavalactone percentage. That is not enough to make either of the decisions above. Here is what a certificate needs to carry to be useful.

Screening for kratom, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine Kava-plus-kratom combination products exist. We require those three analytes on the panel, and we will not carry a combination product under any circumstances.

A word on what that last row can and cannot tell you. A non-detect result covers only the analytes a laboratory actually looked for, using one method, at one detection limit. It is silent about every compound the panel omits. On the certificates we publish today the substantiated analytes are kratom, mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, and we do not claim more than those three cover. The reports themselves are on the COA page, published as the brands supply them.

What "noble" on a label is worth without a test

Roughly nothing, and that is not a cynical position. It is the same position we take on every unverified claim in this category. "Noble" is an assertion about the chemistry of a specific batch of root, and chemistry is measured, not declared.

An acetone-based field test circulates in the kava trade as a quick screen for tudei material, and it has some utility at a farm gate. It is not a substitute for HPLC on the batch you are actually buying, and no retailer should be relying on it.

We should also be straight about what our own review found. Looking for a finished kava product that combined water extraction, verified noble cultivar on a batch certificate, root-only plant part, kratom-alkaloid screening and the standard liver caution already on the label, we did not find one. Several brands satisfy two or three of those. None satisfied all of them. That is why kava is not currently in our catalogue, and it is why the honest description of our position is that the specification will have to be imposed on a supplier rather than shopped for. Kavalactones concentrate in the root and rhizome. Leaves, stems and peelings carry less of the wanted material and more pipermethystine and flavokavain B. Aerial material is also cheaper, which makes it the obvious substitution risk in a supply chain under price pressure.
